In this territory on the 24th of June 1859 the Piedmontese inflicted a decisive defeat on th Austrians which marked the destiny of the Second War of Independence. The Battle brought about an enormus sacrifice of human life which is recorded for ever in the mighty Panoramic Tower (Memorial) which rises up on top of a hill and with a height of 64.6 m (close to 213 foot) dominates the landaround it. The building was erected between 1890 and 1893, base on a project bythe Bergamasque architect Frizzoni.
